Old Town’s Archer, Monmouth’s Butterfield win state free-throw contest

Colby Archer of Old Town High School and Kaeti Butterfield of Monmouth Academy were crowned champions Saturday of the annual state free-throw shooting contest conducted by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches in conjunction with the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Games at Husson University in Bangor.

Archer, the boys North region champion, and South region champion Nicco Pitre of Falmouth each made 48 of 50 free throws to force a 10-shot overtime. Pitre made 8 of 10 during the extra session and Archer then missed his first try before making his last nine attempts to capture the title.

Other boys finalists were East champion Reece Dannenberg of George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill and Central region qualifier Marshall Doyon of Mt. Blue High School in Farmington.

Butterfield, the Central region girls champion, made 49 of 50 free throws to earn her state title.

East champion Chelsea Crockett of Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, South champion Meghan Graff of South Portland High School and North champion Emily Wheaton of Presque Isle High School also competed for the girls’ free-throw shooting crown.
