Bangor’s Fleming receives UMaine scholarship offer

Bangor High School junior forward Matt Fleming received a scholarship offer from the University of Maine following the Rams’ 73-63 loss to Windham on Friday night.

Fleming, the transfer from Oxford Hills of South Paris who earned second-team Bangor Daily News All-Maine recognition as a sophomore with the Vikings, scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the game and is now averaging 27 points and 12 rebounds per game through the Rams’ 1-1 start.

UMaine head coach Bob Walsh and several of his players – including older brother Andrew, a sophomore forward for the Black Bears – attended the game at Red Barry Gymnasium.

Shortly after the game a family member reported the scholarship offer, which subsequently was confirmed by a source close to the UMaine men’s basketball program.

If Fleming accepts the offer, he would join the UMaine program as a freshman for the 2019-20 season and again would be teammates with his older brother.

Andrew and Matt Fleming were teammates at Oxford Hills during the 2015-16 season, when Andrew was a senior and Matt a freshman with the Vikings.

Fleming also is said to have already received a scholarship offer from Franklin Pierce University, an NCAA Division II program in Rindge, New Hampshire.
